How Effective is UV Sterilization?

3rd Party Lab Testing Proves Arc Destroys >99.99% of Coronavirus

A wealth of scientific and medical studies exist proving the efficacy of UV-C in disinfecting surfaces, water and air against a whole host of human pathogens. In fact, to date, there are no known UV-resistant microorganisms (viruses and bacteria) on the planet. However, while the methodology and efficacy of UV-C in general is universally accepted, the adoption of this technology has been slower – largely due to the lack of uniform performance standards for UV-C disinfection devices. In other words, measuring how well a particular device performs. As the novel coronavirus pandemic has sparked an influx of UV-C disinfection products to market, the absence of such uniform performance standards makes it difficult for consumers to make informed, science-based investment decisions when comparing UV-C products.

The development of standards by bodies such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in partnership with industry organizations such as the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) will accelerate acceptance by the healthcare industry and the public, facilitating science-based decision-making across the board.  But for now, it remains difficult to make objective comparisons between products on the market.  

However, in the absence of uniform performance standards, R-Zero looks to the scientific and medical community for current best practices in testing standards to evaluate the efficacy of UV systems. As such, current best practices are to conduct real-world, lab simulated experiments with live microorganisms – ideally, by an International Standards Organization (ISO) accredited, independent third party laboratory. Tests should also be performed to applicable ASTM (E3135-18 and E1053-11) standards. This type of testing can be time consuming and costly, making it an unattractive step for many manufacturers of UV equipment. At R-Zero, one of our core company values is to lead with science. As such, real-world simulated efficacy experiments were performed on Arc, in alignment with current best practices, to best evaluate the performance and efficacy of R-Zero’s flagship device against deadly pathogens. 

R-Zero Testing + Results

In September, BioScience Labs, an ISO-accredited independent laboratory, tested Arc against live biological samples of human coronavirus, feline calicivirus (FCV) [norovirus family], MRSA and E. coli carriers. R-Zero selected  microorganisms endemic to the environments Arc will be used in, ensuring our partners understand Arc’s efficacy against the pathogens most important to them. 

Tests were conducted per ASTM E3135-18 and ASTM E1053-11 standards, which are recognized by the EPA, CDC and FDA, in order to determine the efficacy of R-Zero’s UV-C system. 

Across all tests conducted by BioScience Labs, Arc achieved a >4 log reduction or >99.99% reduction of the following pathogens, at a distance of eight feet: 

  • Human Coronavirus
  • Feline Calicivirus 
  • MRSA 
  • E. coli 

Put differently, these test results prove during a single seven minute cycle, at a distance of eight feet, Arc successfully destroys over 99.99% of the following pathogens

  • Human Coronavirus
  • Feline Calicivirus 
  • MRSA 
  • E. coli 

This testing data proves the hospital-grade efficacy of Arc, and its ability to significantly decrease pathogenic risk across a variety of environments. 

Why is Testing Data so Important?

Testing data is crucial. Especially in the absence of a uniform standard for determining UV-C performance, companies have a responsibility to conduct (lab-simulated) real-world testing in order to prove a UV-C disinfection solution works. The scientific consensus is third party testing data should be available to prove any and all efficacy claims made about a UV disinfection product. Unfortunately, without a regulated standard companies are required to adhere to, many simply don’t go the extra mile to conduct third party lab testing. 

At R-Zero, we believe conducting real world, scientific testing to prove efficacy claims, is critical. UV-C technology is an important disinfection tool, and everyone using it should know exactly how their system works – which includes how effective it is at reducing pathogens. 

If you are considering purchasing a UV-C disinfection device, ask for proof regarding product claims, and whether it was tested against live microorganisms by an accredited third party lab. Brass tacks: If a product claims to have impressive disinfection results, but is unable to provide scientific data to substantiate those claims – it should be a red flag.
